The HPLC-HRMS combination is used for the separation and analysis of organic compounds. The substances result from a highly diverse range of synthesis techniques from a variety of research groups. They require very thorough analytics to verify the identity of new compounds and, where appropriate, the use of preparative HPLC to solve complex separation problems (e.g., diastereomer separation). Important is the determination of the molecular formula by the exact determination of the molecular masses using considerably less synthesized material than in classical quantitative elemental analysis. This HPLC-HRMS is superior to an HPLC-DAD because the detector does not rely on chromophores, which makes preparative HPLC more reliable.
