Concrete Canoe Raft

Concrete Canoe Raft 2024

This year, our chair finally had a concrete canoe team again to represent the Ruhr University Bochum at the 19th Concrete Canoe Raft. After thorough planning in the individual working groups, the students developed two concrete canoes suitable for competition. With these, they traveled to Brandenburg to the Havel, where they successfully competed with three teams against numerous other teams from all over Europe.

What is the concrete canoe raft?

The concrete canoe regatta combines the disciplines of concrete construction and boat building technology. In this competition, which is both technical and sporting, teams from various national and international institutions compete against each other. The aim is for a team of students to design and construct a buoyant canoe made of concrete. In addition to buoyancy and robustness, the focus of the design and material concept is on optimising weight and flow resistance. In addition to the technical and sporting performance, the presentation of the concrete canoe is also taken into account in the evaluation.

What is the procedure?

The Concrete Canoe RUB (CCR) team is made up of three working groups, each with three to four students:

  • AK-1: Design & Modelling
  • AK-2: Formwork concept & construction
  • AK-3: Material concept & concrete design

The concreting of the concrete canoe is done together with all working groups. In addition, a report is to be prepared that presents the main results of each working group. This report is a prerequisite for participation in the regatta and can be credited as part of a project work in both the Bachelor's degree programme UI&BI (WP09) and the Master's degree programme BI (BI-PA01) (6 CP).
