Voluntary Scientific Year

Voluntary scientific year at the Wind Engineering and Fluid Mechanics working group? What exactly does the working group do?

Our working group is concerned with the effects of natural wind on the built environment in which we live.

If you are wondering how buildings (towers, bridges, etc.) withstand strong storms, how dust and gases are dispersed by wind in our cities or how wind is converted into usable energy, then you have already found some of the questions we are dealing with!

Has this aroused your scientific curiosity?

During your Voluntary Scientific Year with us, you will experience experiments on building or city models in our own wind tunnel or using numerical methods. From time to time, you will also create models in the small workshop next to the wind tunnel or print models with the 3D printer and then install them in the boundary layer wind tunnel. You can support us with measurements on towers or complete wind turbines - on site, close to the sensor and on screen. You will gain an insight into the teaching of the Bachelor subject "Fluid Mechanics" and perhaps also into other subjects.

If you would like to carry out your own experimental and theoretical research and gain an insight into scientific work in the field of civil engineering, you've come to the right place!

Max, the first FSJ participant to complete his FSJ with us in the working group, has recorded some of his experiences from his year with us in a video
